About Us

Our roots go back to the nineteenth century when French communities on both sides of the Mississippi sought to form societies with a well-defined prupose. The names of these organizations, for example, French Benevolent Society or La Société Française d’Aide Mutuelle, reflected their purpose of helping the poor, the unfortunate and the sick. But towards the end of the century, a civil society, more open to the needs of the poor classes changed the nature of these French groups, orienting them towards patriotic commemorations and the propagation of French culture: La Société du 14 Juillet, la Société Franco-Américaine de Saint Louis, and finally La Société Française de Saint Louis, whose constitution was promulgated in 1914 and renewed in 1944.

Our Goal

Though our constitution does not have a defined purpose, the goal of our organization is to ensure the survival of the French language and culture in St. Louis - through activities and events that have taken place since the beginning of the twentieth century.

These activities take place throughout the year and include a celebration of July 14; a wreath-laying ceremony at Soldiers’ Memorial in observance of the Armistice of 1918; a mass in the old basilica in honor of Louis IX, and a wreath-laying ceremony at the statue of Pierre Laclède, founder of the city. We also attend conferences on various subjects such as the art of stained glass, the pages of French history, the great monuments of Paris and elsewhere, the greats of literature, art and music, and many more. But our organization is not always so serious; we have fun, French style! Christmas, Kings Day, and Mardi Gras are among the other occasions we celebrate.
